Showcase Your Multimedia Resume with a Custom URL Quick-Link

Tiny-URL-close-up
Creating a customized quick-link for your BackStage.com Multimedia Resume is a great way to promote yourself. After creating a short, easy-to-remember link for your resume, you can add the link to your business cards, include the link in your email-signature, and link to your resume from other websites. For instance, you could post the link on your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, so your contacts will be able to easily view your resume, photos, and reels on Back Stage.

You can create a quick-link in a few simple steps: Just visit your "Manage My Resumes" page on BackStage.com; click on the "Promote My Resumes - Your Resume Page Link" option to find the link to the "shareable" versions of your resume; then paste the link(s) into the "URL to make tiny" field on a free link-shortening site like TinyURL.com; and choose the custom URL text you'd like to use in the link. Or you could even redirect your own website domain to point directly to your resumes on BackStage.com.

Examples: Actress Sri Gordon created this TinyURL link to showcase her full resume on BackStage.com: www.tinyurl.com/SriGordon. And I've used GoDaddy.com to redirect www.LukeCrowe.com to my profile on LinkedIn.com.

See below for detailed instructions:

CREATE YOUR OWN CUSTOMIZED QUICK-LINK:

1) Visit your Manage My Resumes page on BackStage.com, scroll down to the "Promote Your Resumes" section, and then click on the "Your Resume Page Link" option. (This will provide you with a link to the "shareable" versions of your resumes. It's important that you use this option, because the "shareable" links will allow people to view your resumes without having to log into BackStage.com, allowing you to share your media-enhanced CV with people that might not have a Back Stage username of their own.)

2) Your shareable "Promote My Resumes" link will look something like this: http://casting.backstage.com/resumes/link.asp?actor=SRIGORDON. Whether you have only one or multiple resumes in your BackStage.com account, all of your resumes will be listed on this page. This is your personalized, shareable Resumes Landing Page.

3) Open up one of your resumes on this page. If you're using the newest version of a web-browser like Chrome or Firefox, then you'll see the URL for this specific resume at the top of the page. This is also a shareable link, but it's special because it links directly to your FULL resume. Copy this URL (highlight it with your mouse and then right-click and choose "copy," or click Ctrl-C on your keyboard), because it won't be easy to remember. This type of full-resume shareable link will look something like this: http://casting.backstage.com/resumes/ViewResume_p3.asp?ResumeID=m8Y4JGRoks9luYcbqUcggw3Ni%2FQt.

4) Now visit http://tinyurl.com (or another reputable link-shortening service). In the box labeled "Enter a long URL to make tiny," paste in the link to your shareable Resumes Landing Page (if you want to link to the shareable list of all your resumes) or paste in the special shareable URL for the FULL resume that you want to promote.

5) In the "Custom alias" box, type in your name (or another easy to remember word or phrase), without any spaces. Then click the "Make TinyURL!" button.

6) If the Tiny URL you've requested is available, you'll see a confirmation message. If it's not available, then you'll be prompted to choose a different URL. Once you have a URL you're happy with, write it down so you'll remember it; and then share it with everyone you know.

Examples: www.tinyurl.com/SriGordon (links directly to a full resume on BackStage.com, quickly showing off the actor's photos, credits, training, skills, links, and demo reels) and www.tinyurl.com/SriGordonResumes (links to the actor's shareable "My Resumes" landing page, which can showcase multiple resumes at once).

CREATE YOUR OWN WEBSITE DOMAIN:

1) Visit a website domain-registration site (aka a DNS provider or registrar) like GoDaddy.com and purchase the name of the website you want (e.g., www.YourName.com). You do not need to pay for any of their extra web-hosting services -- all you need is the most basic option (registering whatever website domain name that you want), which can be as cheap as $12/year.

2) After you own a website name, use the website-management tools on GoDaddy.com (or whatever service you used to purchase your website domain) to redirect or forward your website (or a particular URL within your website's domain) so that the URL will automatically bring people to your Multimedia Resume on BackStage.com.

Example: I've used GoDaddy.com to register the website domain www.LukeCrowe.com, which I've set up to automatically bring visitors to my profile on LinkedIn.com. You could do something similar by registering a website domain name of your own, and then redirecting it to your Back Stage resume, showcasing your credits, photos, and reels.

GoDaddy has detailed domain-redirect instructions here: http://community.godaddy.com/help/article/5120
